PEG CITY MUSIC JOURNAL
PASS IT ON - Saturday January 9
SAVE THE WINDSOR HOTEL
Sign the Petition
Local blues artist Kathy Kennedy is not only passionate about her music but also about her, our, community. In an effort to protect the rich cultural heritage of Peg City, she has spearheaded the campaign to save the historic Windsor Hotel.
THE FIRST SHOT: Kathy Kennedy's email en-mass
To: City of Winnipeg
This Saturday January 9, 2pm a group of protesters and musicians gathered in front of Winnipeg's Windsor Hotel to rally against the demolition of Winnipeg's most historic blues and roots venue. It is about to be thoughtlessly destroyed to make way for a parking lot. Despite the substantial one million dollar bid to buy the hotel by the owners of the Royal George Hotel: Rick Penner and Boyd Newton as well as their partners, the offer was denied. These bidders would surely respect the institution as a prominent institution in the history of Winnipeg and would keep the musical fires burning in the heart of Winnipeg. Definitely a better choice for our city! Charlie Chaplin stayed there and in the past 30 years, some of the best blues acts in the world have performed there, including numerous local artists who still faithfully frequent the location.
The Windsor is 107 years old and is a historic building.
The Windsor Hotel
187 Garry St.
Saturday Jan.9, 2pm
THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE:
- The City of Winnipeg is interested in turning the hotel into a parking lot for the soon to be relocated Police HQ.
JUST THE FACTS (SO FAR):
- The Windsor Hotel was denied heritage status in 2007, despite its historic and cultural significance.
- Mayor Sam Katz telephoned Kathy Kennedy to deny that the City is bidding on the hotel, but hasn't put that in writing.
- Calgary-based owners' aren't commenting.
- Lone Winnipeg-based partner, Sukhi Gill, confirmed that the hotel is for sale, and claimed no offers have been made.
- The owners of The Royal George Hotel in Transcona and partners offered to purchase the hotel with the intent of bringing back the blues, but were turned down without a counter-proprosal.
- Most importantly, there is an online petition to save the Windsor Hotel (by encouraging current ownership to consider community impact and responsibility, not just their own pocketbook, in the sale decision)
